System requirements

Windows
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. There is no Mac build yet. One is coming
DaVinci Resolve
Resolve Studio only. The free edition of Resolve does not load OpenFX plug-ins at all. Tested on Resolve Studio 21.0.4 and 21.1.
Premiere Pro
Premiere Pro on Windows. Tested on Premiere Pro 26.5.2 (Premiere Pro 2026).
Graphics card
NVIDIA RTX 2060 or newer. Required in DaVinci Resolve and in Premiere Pro. Tested on the RTX 2060 and newer.
Fastest with
MP4, MOV, MKV or MXF files in H.264, HEVC (H.265) or ProRes. H.264 and HEVC need the graphics card's hardware video decoder; ProRes does not. A file the graphics card cannot read has to be converted first.
Installing
Administrator rights, with the program closed. Close Resolve, or Premiere Pro, After Effects and Media Encoder, first. About 57 MB to download.
Internet
Once, to activate. Then it checks in about every 7 days, and works offline for up to 30 days.

Get the installer

Use the download button above, or the one on your account page. For Resolve the file is BallTracer-0.2.4-Setup.exe; for Premiere Pro, BallTracer-Premiere-0.2.4-Setup.exe. One key activates both.

Windows will warn you. The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows says the publisher is unknown. Choose More info, then Run anyway.

Check the file (optional)

In PowerShell, in the folder you saved it to, run Get-FileHash BallTracer-0.2.4-Setup.exe. It must print this code:

Install it

  1. Close DaVinci Resolve completely. The installer will not start while Resolve is open.
  2. Close Premiere Pro, After Effects and Media Encoder. The installer will not run while any of them is open, and asks you to close them.
  3. Run the file and say yes when Windows asks for administrator rights. There is nothing to unzip and no folder to choose.
  4. Click Next, then Finish. The plug-in goes to C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX\Plugins\BallTracer.ofx.bundle, and Resolve's plug-in cache is cleared, so the first start afterwards is slower.
  5. Click Next, then Finish. The plug-in goes to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\7.0\MediaCore\BallTracer\.
  6. Already installed? One extra page offers Repair, Reinstall or Remove. To update, choose Repair. Your settings and your licence are kept.

In Premiere Pro

Ball Tracer is in the Effects panel under Video Effects → Ball Tracer → Ball Tracer. After Effects and Media Encoder list it too, because the installer puts it in Adobe's shared plug-in folder, but it does not work in After Effects.

Activate it

  1. Start Resolve and find Ball Tracer under Effects Library → OpenFX → Ball Tracer.
  2. Start Premiere Pro and find Ball Tracer under Video Effects → Ball Tracer → Ball Tracer in the Effects panel.
  3. Copy your key from your account page.
  4. In Ball Tracer's Licence group, paste it into Licence Key, press Enter, then press Activate.
  5. Drag Ball Tracer onto a clip, select the clip and open Effect Controls. In the Licence group, press the button in the Activate row, paste the key into the small window that opens, and press Activate.

One key covers both programs. Each program counts on its own: Resolve and Premiere Pro on the same computer take one activation each.

Activation needs the internet once. Until then, the plug-in draws the word TRIAL across every frame.
